John David Mooney's Lecture : Art and Spirituality

Wednesday, March 15, 2017 7:00pm - 8:00pm Assumption Church Lecture on the lower level 323 West Illinois Street, Chicago, IL 60654 Entrance on Illinois street, handicap entrance around the corner. Free parking in Martparc at Orleans and Hubbard (up to 4 hours).

"Art and Spirituality" Artist John David Mooney will present a talk about Marc Chagall’s White Crucifixion. It is one of Pope Francis’ favorite paintings, and, luckily for us, in the collection of The Art Institute of Chicago. This painting, taken to Florence last November, for a special exhibition, provided the opportunity for the Holy Father to have a private viewing. Mooney will reflect on the importance of art, as both inspiration and commentary on the human condition, as exemplified by Chagall. Brief Bio John David Mooney is well known for his large-scale public sculptures, abroad, and in the U.S., such as the transformation of the Chicago Tribune building into a light sculpture for their 150th anniversary, and for the Atlanta Olympics. Permanent works include Spiral Galaxy, on the grounds of the Adler Planetarium, and a suspended sculpture made of Waterford Crystal and aluminum in the John Crerar Library’s atrium at the University of Chicago. Commentaries have mentioned the “underlying spiritual essence” of Mooney’s own work.
